How to Find Your Correct Shoe Size When Shopping Online

You order shoes online. Your usual size. The shoe arrives, you try it on, and the toes pinch.

It happens to most online shoppers in India at some point. Brands list sizes in UK, US, or EU. The same number means a different foot length in each system. Pick the wrong one and the shoe doesn’t fit.

The fix is simple. Measure your foot at home, check which size system the brand uses, and match the two before you order. This guide covers how to find shoe size online, step by step.

Why do most people order the wrong shoe size online?

Three reasons come up again and again.

  • First, the size systems don’t match. A UK 8 is an EU 42, a US 9, and an Indian 8. Most online listings show one or two of these. If you pick the wrong column, the shoe is a full size off before it leaves the warehouse.
  • Second, feet aren’t static. They widen with age, swell in Indian summer heat, and shift after pregnancy or weight change. The size you wore five years ago may not be your size today.
  • Third, every brand builds on a slightly different mould. A size 8 in one brand can feel like an 8.5 in another. Without checking the brand’s size chart, you’re guessing.

A Journal of Foot and Ankle Research review found 63% to 72% of participants wore shoes that didn’t match their feet in length or width. Most of that mismatch traces back to a measurement that never happened.

How often should you measure your shoe size?

Feet shift over time, but most adults never re-measure. A yearly check catches changes before your next order goes wrong.

  • Adults: once a year, or when a regular shoe feels tight
  • Kids under 10: every two to three months
  • Pre-teens and teens: every four to six months

How to measure your foot at home

Five minutes, things you already have at home.

You will need: A4 paper larger than your foot, a pencil, a ruler or tape in centimetres, and the socks you wear with shoes. Set up on a hard floor against a wall. Carpet and soft mats throw the reading off.

Step 1. Pick the right time of day

Feet swell during the day, especially in Indian summers. Measure in the evening. A morning reading will be half a size small by 6 PM.

Step 2. Tape the paper against a wall

Flat, hard floor. The edge of the paper should touch the wall, so your heel can press against it.

Step 3. Stand on the paper, heel to the wall

Socks on. Stand up. Full weight on the foot. If you sit while tracing, the foot doesn’t spread, and the reading comes out small.

Step 4. Trace, measure, and pick the bigger foot

Hold the pencil straight up and outline the foot. Mark the tip of the longest toe (sometimes the second toe) and the back of the heel. Measure heel to toe in centimetres. Repeat on the other foot, and use the bigger reading. Between two sizes, go up. Never down.

How to tell if a shoe fits correctly

The paper says you’re a size 8. Your foot still has to agree.

  • A thumb’s width between your longest toe and the front of the shoe
  • The heel holds firm without slipping
  • No pinching at the widest part of your foot
  • Toes wiggle without hitting the front
  • Nothing rubs at the ankle or the back of the heel

Fail any of those, and the size or shape is wrong. A different size or style fixes most of it.

What is the Indian shoe size chart?

Indian sizes match UK sizes one-to-one, so a UK 9 is an Indian 9. The other systems shift. The EU runs 33 to 34 numbers above the UK. US men’s is UK + 1. US women’s is UK + 2. Knowing these conversions when you find a shoe size online keeps returns low.

Does the same size fit every type of shoe?

Same foot, same number, very different shoes. The size of the box is the same. The fit logic isn’t.

  • Running shoes: A thumb’s width up front. Snug heel, no slipping. Feet swell on Indian summer runs, so stick to your usual size. Types of running shoes cover materials and soles.
  • Sneakers and casual shoes: Your usual size. No sliding, no pinching. Winter socks may need half a size up.

  • School shoes: Room for growth, but not so much that the shoe slips. Velcro or laces help adjust.
  • Sliders, clogs, and sandals: Your usual size, relaxed fit. With straps, half a size up works.
  • Trekking and walking shoes: Half a size up. Thicker socks and swelling on long walks need the room.

Common shoe sizing mistakes online shoppers make

Even with the right size in hand, these four slip-ups send shoes straight back.

  • Morning trace, no socks. The shoe arrives half a size too tight.
  • Trusting the label without checking the brand’s own chart.
  • Picking the smaller size because the bigger one feels loose. Insoles fix loose; nothing fixes tight.
  • Skipping width. Indian feet often sit wider at the ball.

A quick checklist before you order online

Run through this before you click buy.

  • Measure both feet in the evening with socks on. Use the bigger reading
  • Check the brand’s own size chart, not just the label
  • UK to India is one-to-one. The EU is roughly the UK + 33. US men’s is roughly UK + 1
  • Match the fit rule to the shoe type
  • For kids, re-measure every two to three months

FAQs

How often should I measure my shoe size?

Once a year for adults. Every two to three months for kids. Sooner if a regular shoe feels tight, or after pregnancy or a weight change.

Is the Indian shoe size the same as the UK?

Yes. Indian sizing uses the same scale as the UK. A UK 9 is an Indian 9. EU and US sizes need to be converted first.

What if my two feet are different sizes?

Always go with the bigger foot. A thin insole or tighter laces fix the smaller side. A tight shoe on the larger side fixes nothing.

Should I size up or down if I’m between sizes?

Size up. Especially for running, walking, trekking, and kids’ shoes. A thin insole or thicker socks take up the extra room. You can’t shrink a shoe.

How do I check foot width?

Wrap a tape around the widest part of your foot, usually the ball. If a shoe pinches there with the right length, the shoe is too narrow at that point.
